Register Me First

My late grandfather, a staunch Republican, said on more than one occasion: "What did they think was happening? Where did they think they were taking them?"

He was talking about the trains full of Jewish people, taken from their homes and villages in Nazi-occupied Europe, heading toward death in camps. He wondered what the non-Jewish persons, who weren't subject to this persecution, were thinking as the trains passed their homes. He wondered why they didn't speak up and do something.

I wonder what he would say about what's happening in the USA, today.

The horrors in Nazi-occupied Germany in part started with the registration of Jewish persons.

Guess what? There's a plan under discussion to "use extreme vetting," which would include a registry of immigrants from Muslim countries.

From The Huffington Post: 11/16/16:

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who is reportedly being considered for the
post of attorney general, said in an interview that Trump’s policy advisers had also discussed drafting a proposal for his consideration to reinstate a registry for immigrants from Muslim countries.

Today's action: Tweet or make a FB status about standing in solidarity with Muslim people in this country. Who are you? Why does this scare you? Why does this matter to you? End your statement with the hashtag: #registermefirst.

Here's mine:

Hopefully, it won't come to this. Hopefully, this talk will go away. Hopefully, the hashtags will remind the racist hatemongers creeping into the White House that we are paying attention and they won't get away with it.

But if it does, I'm taking my white, USA-born, Wiccan-ass down to the nearest Muslim registry and registering myself. I hope you will join me.
